The High-Pressure Counterflow Ignition setup is designed to investigate the effects of pressure, fuel-loading, and strain rate on the forced ignition temperatures of gaseous and pre-vaporized liquid fuels. This facility complements the RCM by investigating ignition under convective/diffusive conditions more closely related to those of practical combustors, and which allow the validation of complete (i.e. including kinetics and transport) combustion models in computationally-tractable quasi-one-dimensional configuration. Optical access allows the usage of several non-intrusive diagnostic techniques, including high-speed imaging, PIV, and chemiluminescence imaging.
